Manny Pacquiao #1 Pound for Pound Quarterly Rankings

Manny Pacquiao is now tied with Floyd Mayweather for the BoxingScene.com #1 pound for pound quarterly rankings. On the list, Pacquiao will be the sole #1 rank should he win in the upcoming Manny Pacquiao vs David Diaz fight. Here's what Cliff Rold has to say:

"I'll be up front and say that I'm among those who had Marquez narrowly edging Pacquiao out, but with two fighters that good and that close, the official verdict must stand. That presents us with a fighter for the ages no matter how you slice it. He's the only fighter in history to win the World title at 112 and 126 lbs.; the only one to win the World titles 112 and 130; and the only one to pull off that hat trick. Throw in an alphabelt at 122 and Pacquiao's blend of scale climbing and pressure fighting is as close to Henry Armstrong as today's fans may ever get.

Now look at who he's been fighting. Barrera and Morales are locks for the Hall of Fame; Marquez is on the bubble in terms of wins but certainly merits strong consideration based on aesthetic evidence. Yes, Barrera may have been past it in the Pacquiao rematch last October, but he was also nip-tuck only months before with Marquez.

Now Pacquiao heads up the scale in pursuit of a potential record fourth legitimate World title; he'll have to beat a solid contender and titlist in Diaz to move that direction and will be favored to do so. Think about it: He started his career at 108 lbs., meaning he's crossed a threshold of eight current and four "classic" weight classes and has improved along the way. Depending on what comes after and if he defeats Diaz, Pacquiao could easily have this spot to himself by the end of the year."

Update: There's an interesting discussion at BoxingScene Forum.

Post Fight Interview Video and Transcript of Pacquiao vs Marquez II

After Manny Pacquiao won the fight, Larry Merchant interviewed both Manny and Juan Manuel. He asked them through his boxing analysis question and Merchant's asking them both if the third round knockdown is a factor. Both fighters think that they've won.

Here's the transcript and the full video of the interview.

Larry Merchant interviewing Manny Pacquiao

Larry Merchant: Congratulations Manny, were you surprise by the result? Did you think that you have won the fight?

Manny Pacquiao: Yeah, I think I won the fight, and uh, I really expect this fight it's gonna be hard because Marquez he trained hard and he prepared for this fight.

Larry Merchant: What did you see in him that was different from the first fight? What did you do to try and win this fight?

Manny Pacquiao: Actually, the last time, the first time, he jab a lot, and uhm, and then now he, he didn't jab.

Larry Merchant: How much did the cut-off over your eye bother you?

Manny Pacquiao: Oh, it really bothered me because I can't see my right eyes, and uh, I can't see his uh, right and then left and right hands and then in hook. That's why I'm so bothered and I told them, I, my coach that I'm uh, make it heal so that I can recover in this fight.

Larry Merchant: The difference in this fight proved to be your knockdown of him. Let's see if we can take another look at the knock down, and you tell us what happens. You try your right hand and you miss...

Manny Pacquiao: Well, uhm, that's our plan, our number one plan, for the training is the left hook and uh, I'm lucky to hit that round.

Larry Merchant: Did he do a good job another than that, of not letting you do too much damage with your left hand?

Manny Pacquiao: Well, uhm, I see Marquez this tonight because uh, he move fast, and he had head movement and uhm, more counterpunch.

Larry Merchant: Could you have beaten him, four years ago, with this style of fighting? We're you so much better now that you we're able to beat him this time?

Manny Pacquiao: Well, I, I think I'm uh, I believe that I do my best try tonight, and uh, I'm happy because I win. It's really hard opponent Marquez that's why I'm uh...

Larry Merchant: All right, we assume that this is your last fight at junior lightweight, that you would move up in weight, for your next fight, is that true?

Manny Pacquiao: I don't now yet, because I didn't talk to my uhm, to my promoter yet, and also my camp. But we have a plan to fight on 135 lbs. but uh, it's not yet, uh, fixed.

Larry Merchant: Thank you, congratulations again Manny.

Larry Merchant interviewing Juan Manuel Marquez

Larry Merchant: Juan Manuel, you fought a wonderful fight. First, tell us how bad was the eye to the late stages of the fight. For you, to be able to deal with.

Juan Manuel Marquez: (English Translation) It didn't affect me, it was a head-butt, and then we thought we won, and the decision wasn't correct.

Larry Merchant: Once again, the knock-down proved to be the difference in this fight. Did you fight, other than that, the fight that you wanted to fight?

Juan Manuel Marquez: (English Translation) Yes, we've hurt him, we've hurt him three, four, five times, but like in 2004, it's not only just one round.

Larry Merchant: Do you feel like in a way, this is the story of your career, that somehow this slipped away from you, as well as you fought him well both times?

Juan Manuel Marquez: (English Translation) I haven't lost, I haven't lost anything, I haven't lost anything at all, and the people will see that we've won. And decisions like this is obviously discouraged, but we believe we won.

Larry Merchant: Thank you Juan Manuel for another wonderful fight.

The see saw action that the audience saw in the Marquez vs Pacquaio II Full Fight is a classic bout that thrilled viewers with their drama, blood and an ending filled with suspense. The win by Manny Pacquiao replaced Juan Manuel Marquez as the next WBC Super Feather Champion. In this very close fight, it was the third round knockdown punch by Pacquiao that buckled Marquez knees, making him land on the floor with a perfect left hand to the chin.

The third round started with both fighters displaying their counterpunching, but after Marquez attempted a right hand that was blocked by Pacquiao, Pacquiao counter-punched with a right hand which missed but was quickly followed with a left hand that sent Juan Manuel Marquez down the floor. Marquez being the fighter that he is, got back up to his feet, to finish an exciting round, but once again was hit twice by Pacquiao's combination right and left, that buckled Marquez in what looks like a partial-knockdown, before the bell rang.

In the end, it was the third round knockdown that became the deciding factor in this exciting fight. Repeating his statement in 2004, Juan Manuel Marquez said that one round doesn’t make a fight, but for the judges, the knockdown was enough of a factor. Pacquiao vs Marquez Rematch is a see saw affair, that although fought with tactics and calculated punches, was nonetheless full of drama that you would have expected of a Pacquiao match. Pacquiao won, and if anything else he proves to be an exciting fighter capable of generating crowd-pleasing suspense in a fight.

The judge's scorecard showed what amount to be a virtual draw, a reminiscent of their May 8, 2004 fight. But unlike their previous fight, one man won this time, that is Manny Pacquiao. So those who waited for four years for a decision has been finally given their due, albeit not so clear cut.

The Unfinished Business looks like unfinished with a rematch maybe on the loom. The third round knocked down delivered in perfect left execution gave Pacquiao the point edge that made him the new WBC and The Ring World Super Featherweight champion. Whoever you think won, it was surely a better fight than the Pacquiao Barrera II fight.
